December’s Perfect 5

If you’re following along with the Perfect 5 Quilts sew-along, you get to assemble all your blocks into a very cool sampler quilt! Maybe you remember I kicked off the sew along with my Cobblestone Lake quilt. I bought caramel-colored cuddle cloth for the backing, so I hope to complete the quilt soon.

I love the Perfect 5 Quilts book and Perfect 5 ruler, so I already have plans for a few projects. This stack of Corey Yoder fabric is calling me to come and play! I printed all the sew-along instructions just in case I decide to make the sampler quilt from my Fig Tree Quilts charm square stash. Remember, if you want to make the sampler quilt, you need to purchase the book and print all the instructions from the sew-along.

Perfect 5 Quilt Plans

Time for a Do-Over

Early this year I made a quilt for my brother, who has a Christmas birthday. I was thrilled to have one homemade gift ready so far in advance. That is, it was done until I pulled it out of the washing machine. To my horror, all the wool batting came through the surface of the quilt and filled my washer tub. Perhaps you can imagine my tears, frustration, and anger. I sent an email to the batting manufacturer, who promptly replied. There was a small lot of batting that did not perform according to the care instructions, so the manufacturer’s rep offered to take my entire quilt apart for me so that I could replace the batting.

If you look at the photo above, all my stitching lines are well marked. But I need to iron out the wrinkles and determine whether I need to mark the lines again. Of course I trimmed my backing and binding while making the quilt, so I’ll have to stitch the trimmings back on so I can once again baste, quilt and bind the quilt. This is my December goal: complete the process so I can give the quilt to my brother on his birthday.

Chasing Squirrels

Isn’t it funny how great ideas pop into your head when there’s a looming deadline? Yes, I’m feeling distracted by those “squirrels” that look much more fun. The first squirrel came via Instagram. I saw a Moda Love quilt made from Feed Sacks: True Blue and knew it would be the perfect picnic quilt. I found a layer cake on Etsy, a few fat quarters for a binding while on a mother/daughter trip, and bought background fabric during the Fat Quarter Shop’s Black Friday sale. Oh, I want to make this quilt. Right. Now.

Moda Love is a free pattern.

And the last squirrel I’ll blame on Pinterest. I saw a zipper pouch made from a candy wrapper while mindlessly scrolling. For some reason, I thought of my niece’s upcoming birthday and knew I should make her a pouch from a Cheetos bag. So, thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop, I ordered iron-on vinyl and a By Annie zipper on Black Friday. (In case you’re wondering why a Cheetos bag, my niece told her mom that the best meal of her life was at my house when I let her eat Cheetos dipped in refried beans for lunch. Yuck. And sorry, it’s true. Thankfully, there are no photos of that meal.)

So there’s my Perfect 5 wrap-up for December: five projects that I want to make. Only one will likely make it under the Christmas tree unless I chase a Cheetos-colored squirrel.

Joyfully,

Tracie
